a play by Braddon Mendelson
“Rembrandt Perfected” has concluded its successful World Premiere run at The MAIN in Newhall, California. Prepare to join us again, as this award-winning, farcical, historical romp through 1830s Paris with the 19th Century’s two most significant inventors comes to a stage near you.
Samuel Morse and Scenic Artist Louis Daguerre Meet in Paris, Create Chaos and Laughter
Paris, 1839. American artist and telegraph inventor Samuel Morse and scenic artist Louis Daguerre — whose daguerreotype would usher in the new world of photography — meet for the first time at Daguerre’s studio in Paris.
While demonstrating their inventions to one another, they notice a silhouetted figure in one of Daguerre’s pictures — the first human ever depicted in a photographic image — and devise an outlandish scheme to exploit the individual as part of an ill-conceived publicity stunt to save a failing theatre.
But first, they must find him.
A fun and witty fast-paced comedy by Braddon Mendelson.
World Premiere, January 2023
After the show, guests entered into the theatre lobby to discover it had been transformed into an exhibition of drawings, patent images, and photos representing the works of both Louis Daguerre and Samuel Morse. Available for purchase were postcards, books, and limited edition copies of the “Rembrandt Perfected” script.
In addition, a photography historian, Konstantin Golovchinsky (ObjectQuality.com) displayed a large portion of his collection of 19th century daguerreotypes for guests to examine.
“While the play is a comedy,” noted playwright Mendelson, “audiences will learn the real history, almost two-hundred years ago, of a time when the world took its very first glimpse at the miracle that is a photograph image.”
